Children's Screentime Report

Introduction

Our latest report examines the time spent by children on screens across the world.

We have defined five periods of interest:

  • 2002-2007: Pre-smartphone democratization period

  • 2008-2013: Pre-social media period Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok (formerly Musical.ly)

  • 2014-2019: Pre-pandemic period

  • 2020-2022: Lockdown period

  • 2023-2025: Current period

Key Findings

  • Health: Average daily screen time among children aged 0-5 exceed pediatric recommendations (2023-2025 period).
  • COVID-19: As a result of lockdowns, screen time for 0-18 years old worldwide has increased from 2 hours and 42 minutes to 4 hours and 6 min following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recommendations

  1. establish access agreements between researchers and companies offering precise screen time measurements integrated into the os.

  2. adopt a standard definition for children's screen time.

  3. encourage research into problematic behaviours related to screens

  4. create a rating system for mobile and software applications based on average usage time modeled on the pegi rating system.

  5. run awareness campaigns on the dangers of children's overexposure.
